Call for proposals: Design for 1014 architecture and history exhibition in October

1014 is located in a six-story, turn-of the century townhouse across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue. It carries on the legacy of its original owner, the last U.S. Ambassador to Imperial Germany and firm believer in the transatlantic friendship. While the building was home to the Goethe House from 1958 until 2009, artists, writers, and intellectuals from Germany and America also met here. Among them were Susan Sontag, Andy Warhol, John McCloy, Günter Grass, Hannah Arendt, Willy Brandt, Konrad Adenauer, Wim Wenders, and Uwe Johnson. Today, 1014 continues along this path, providing a platform for dialogue and the exchange of ideas in the fields of culture and society.

In 2021, 1014 held an architectural design competition for the renovation of the building. To present the winning design and several runners-up, as well as the history of the building and its neighborhood, 1014 plans to host a “pop-up” public exhibition and festival in October 2021.

For the designs and construction of the exhibition, 1014 – in close cooperation with the  exhibition curator and the project manager – is inviting designers and architects to send us their proposals.

Frequently asked questions

Who will select the finalist and what will the decision be based on?

The jury consists of the 1014 staff, the exhibition curator, and a representative from the winning architect team. The jury will base the decision on:

1)    originality and applicability of ideas (40%)

2)   costs of project (30%) – the budget should be concise and can include “extras” (suggested components, which may or may not be added).

3)   experience in exhibition design (30%) – links to and images of past works will be useful.

The total budget for the basis of the exhibition (including all costs) must range between $15,000-$30,000. However, applicants may suggest additional components which lead to a budget which exceeds this figure.

Who is the winning architect for the renovation of 1014 Fifth Avenue?

The winning architects are David Chipperfield / KARO Architects / Paratus Group. To learn more about the commission, visit: German government commissions Chipperfield to remodel Goethe House on Fifth Avenue

Which rooms in the 1014 building will be used for the exhibition?

Designers should make use of the ground floor entrance hall and the second-floor galleries (including the connecting hallway) with an option to activate the grand stair.

Can we attach anything to the walls?

Anything applied to the walls must be fully removable, and nothing can be drilled or nailed into the walls.

There are picture rails in the white room, but not in the dark paneled room. In the dark paneled room, it is difficult to attach items to the walls. Therefore, we recommend that the designer create a temporary structure within the space.

If my proposal is not selected, will I retain the creative rights to my design?

Yes, designers who are not selected will retain the rights to their proposed design.
