1014 Donates Iconic Modular Chairs to Long Island International Private School

August 10, 2024

On August 3rd, 1014 donated 20 custom sustainably made modular chairs to The Knox School, a private international boarding and day school located in Saint James, New York.

In 2020, 1014 – space for ideas held an open competition for the design of sustainably made seating elements that would stimulate audience engagement and provide flexible seating options, while still providing comfort for different demographics. Ravi Raj (RARARA) and Mike Jozewicz (Studio MJD) won the competition with their innovative approach, combining both Rococo and Bauhaus influences in their design to bridge together the past and future of the historic townhouse. Since then, these chairs have hosted thousands of community members, and positively contributed to the iconic ambiance of 1014.

With the renovation of 1014 Fifth Avenue beginning, tough decisions had to be made on what to keep and what to sell or donate. Because of a large surplus of modular chairs, the 1014 team decided to donate them to a similar institution, where the chairs would be repurposed with care. 1014 Communication & Program Associate Jamie Isaacs, a Long Island native, recommended her high school – The Knox School.

The Knox School, founded in 1904, is the oldest established private international boarding and day school on Long Island, offering 6th grade through post-graduate co-education where students are encouraged and inspired to go beyond academics, arts, and athletics to build character, responsibility, and global worldviews. Reflecting on her years at Knox and how it shaped her into who she is today, Jamie felt as though Knox would be the perfect home for the 1014 modular chairs; the chairs would be migrating from one trans-Atlantic educational institution to another - even the coloring of the chairs had matched Knox’s branding, as it is like 1014’s. It was a perfect fit.

The 1014 modular chairs can now be spotted across The Knox School’s 40-acre waterfront campus, in one of their many classroom buildings or five dormitories, enjoyed by students from around the world.
