Open Call for Furniture Designers, Artists & Makers!

New modular seating furniture for 1014 Inc.

1014 is located in a fantastic six-story, turn-of the century townhouse across from the Metropolitan Museum on 5th Avenue. The building formerly hosted the Goethe-Institut and served as a platform for transatlantic dialog where artists, writers and intellectuals from Germany and America met, among them Susan Sonntag, Andy Warhol and Guenter Grass.

1014 aims to continue on this path in providing new forms of communication and an interdisciplinary program catering to a diverse audience. The program mainly takes place on the beautiful second floor of the building, the so-called bel étage. The new seating furniture provide support for a variety of program formats and events. We’re seeking designs that intervene with the traditional space, yet respect the legacy of the building.

As the building is facing refurbishment in the near future, we’re looking for temporary seating elements that

-        Support a casual, honest, contemporary atmosphere

-        Are flexible in use and easily stowable

-        Use sustainable, recycled, non-toxic material where possible

-        Provide seating for up to 60 people

-        Are experimental and tell a story.

1014 will pay a designer’s fee and allocate the budget for the production in agreement with the final draft of the chosen design and its estimated production budget.

We’re excited to receive your submission! Please find the full project scope and application form below.
