October 14 – October 17: A weekend of Architecture, Culture & Community – free events and walking tours

A small building with a large cultural footprint, 1014 Fifth Avenue stands on the cusp of change. 1014: Past and Future presents vignettes from the townhouse’s previous uses as an ambassador’s home and as Goethe House New York, as well as visionary and contextually sensitive renovation proposals by David Chipperfield Architects and other prestigious designers.

Long a haven for artists and intellectuals, and a center of transatlantic cultural and intellectual exchange, the Beaux-Arts townhouse—one of the last of its kind along Museum Mile—will once again be a space for dialogue and exchange with a contemporary cross-disciplinary international residency program for fellows to live and practice together as well as to present their work to New Yorkers.

A Building and its Neighborhood 

Ranging from the ruins of Seneca village to Carl Schurz Park, the Upper East Side neighborhood, which is home to 1014, is one of the world’s premier places for art with a long history of migration from all over the world. The exhibition presents this to the public from October 14th until 17th – each day from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Events throughout the Weekend 

An extensive program of lectures, talks, and art presentations will be presented on October 16th and 17th and will be open to the public and free of charge. Experts will offer presentations and moderated talks on the re-use of historic townhouses, the stories behind UES-mansions, and more. 

Discovering the Neighborhood in Walking Tours 

As part of the program, 1014 offers free walking tours with architects and historians through the Upper East Side. The tours start inside the exhibition 1014: Past and Future  and will then venture into the neighborhood.
